Caring for your Oz Mulimedia Items
Prolonging the Life of Your Oz Videos, Albums, & Cassettes.
*Due to VHS Tapes being one of the lowest quality formats a good idea is to have your videotapes professionally copied every ten to fifteen years.
*The environment for video and audio tapes should be dust free, with a temperature of about 68 degrees Fahrenheit and the humidity around 40 percent.
*Remember that cleanliness is very important to preserve your VCR and tapes. So make sure to regularly clean your VCR and follow recommended maintenance procedures.
*Videotapes are impervious to the weak magnetic fields produced around television sets and other appliances; it is best to keep prized tapes at least a few feet away from electrical machinery and not to stack them on your VCR equipment.
*For material that has been taped onto blank tapes make sure to break off the tab on the video cassette to prevent accidental over-recording.
*Cassettes should be handles as little as possible. Do not touch the surface of the tape.
*Avoid playing valuable tapes on unfamiliar or suspicious playback devices.
*Store cassettes standing on end, like books, in protective plastic containers.
*Keep in cool, dry dust-free areas away from direct sunlight.
*Play and rewind valuable tapes that are in storage at least once every three years. Playing these tapes will relieve stress on the tape to preserve them for longer.
*Albums, CDs, DVDs and other related materials, in general, avoid touching the playing surfaces and keep recordings in a stable environment away from bright light.
*Touch albums only on their edges or on the label area.
*Shelve LPs vertically on a support strong enough to handle their weight.
*Most record jackets should be replaced with sleeves of high-density polyethylene, a kind of plastic that is frosted and will feel slick. The original sleeve may have liner notes or other valuable information. You can store both the record in its new sleeve and the old sleeve inside the original jacket.
*Albums can be cleaned with a water-based record-cleaning fluid, but 78 rpm records should only be dusted, as water or other cleaning fluids may damage them.
*Handle compact discs only by the outer edge or center hole.
*Shelve CDs vertical as well.
*To clean CDs, use a very soft cloth and the moisture from your breath and wipe in motion from the center to the edge.
